LGHeartMurmursCover.130111737[Huron, OH] Bird Dog Publishing, a division of Bottom Dog Press Inc., has announced the release of a book of poetry, Heart Murmurs by area doctor John A. Vanek.

Born and raised in the Cleveland, Ohio, area, John (Jack) Vanek received his medical degree from the University of Rochester, and did his internship at University Hospitals of Cleveland, completing his residency at the Cleveland Clinic. Much of his practice was in the Lorain County area of Ohio.

While practicing medicine for a quarter century he began honing his poetry craft in creative writing workshops and college courses. His poems won contests and were published in a variety of literary journals and magazines. He has since published four dozen poems and been invited to read his work at the George Bush Presidential Library in Texas, the Akron Art Museum in Ohio, and Eckerd College in Florida. His poem, “The People’s Republic,” was printed in Red, White and Blues: Poets on the Promise of America by the University of Iowa Press.  When not reading or writing, he spends his time swimming, boating, and hiking in Sandusky, Ohio, and in St. Petersburg, Florida.  This is his first book.

Poet and editor Elton Glaser comments on Heart Murmurs: “With humor, sympathy, and an eye for what makes us most human, John Vanek offers us a far-ranging view of life that feels hard-earned and complete.” The poems portray the life struggles of his patients and himself.

A series of local readings, talks, and book signings is planned. On June 7, his book will be featured in a book party as part of the monthly Coffeehouse Reading Series at Mr. Smith’s Coffeehouse, 140 Columbus, Ave. Sandusky, Ohio. The event is sponsored by the Firelands Writing Center.

The book is 124 pages and may be ordered in stores, though on-line bookstores or directly by sending $16 to Bird Dog Publishing, PO Box 425, Huron, Ohio 44839.
