A group of area health care advocates for reform gathered at Sandusky Farmers’ Market on Saturday June 27 to petition for change. They were part of a national day of advocacy for health care change. Over 100 signatures were gained and information distributed on reasons and methods of change. The petitions have been faxed on to President Barack Obama of the White House, to Ohio Senators George Voinovich and Sherod Brown, as well as district U.S. House Representative Marcy Kaptur and House Speaker Harry Reid.

The petition reads: “We, the undersigned, support single-payer health care as the most efficient, effective, and humane policy for achieving President Obama’s three basic principles of Health Care Reform: 1. Reduced Cost, 2. Guaranteed Choice, 3. Ensure all Americans of quality, affordable Health Care.”

Kathy Murphy, from the advocates, explains that the group believes that a single-payer system, much like Medicare, is the best reform system because of its control of costs and restriction of paperwork to a central service. “Though Obama’s plan does not presently include this, we feel we must as the long term answer.” Nurse Ann Smith added, “We do support the much needed reform that Obama is working for as a first step. It is long overdue and will benefit all.”

Another organizer, Larry Smith, commented “We were moved by the overwhelming support of the citizens as well as their troubling accounts of problems and needs for better health care.”

The group also had a petition signing at the Mulberry Herb Festival on Huron’s Bogart Road (wherein they gained over another 100 signatures), and will have a table at Sandusky Community Days on July 4.
