SANDUSKY, OH – Ohio Produce Growers and Marketers Association Conference at Kalahari Resort

January 25, 2010

01/20/10 – This year The Erie Wire visited the Ohio Produce Growers and Marketers Association (OPGMA) conference held at Kalahari Resort to speak with agricultural companies about a variety of issues facing residents, and farmers alike in regard to the food industry. Watch interviews with the Ohio Ecological Food and Farmers Association(OEFFA), BioSafe Systems, CIFT and others to learn what brought them to Sandusky for this event. (We regretfully could not obtain interviews with Syngenta, Dupont and Bayer Crop Science; all of which declined to answer the question “How is your company defining Sustainable Agriculture, and what does this mean for Erie County farmers?”)

Syngenta representative (on the left) discussing chemical inputs. Currently, Syngenta faces an uncertain future from an EPA investigation about their product Atrazine and its possible negative health effects reaching people through drinking water - a chemical widely used across the United States.

Bayer representative gladly not discussing Sustainable Agriculture. To their credit, he did reference Bayer's website and/or statewide department that would take a position on the topic.

Dupont representatives refusing to discuss Sustainable Agriculture and how it may impact the livelihood of Erie County farmers.
